Camp Pendleton: In-Situ Thermal Remediation of Mixed Contamination

GEO's Camp Pendleton case study describes in-situ thermal remediation in Oceanside, California, at an area historically used for vehicle maintenance and fuel handling. The contaminants included PCE, TCE, vinyl chloride, BTEX compounds, and naphthalene.

The source lists an approximately 4,800-square-foot treatment zone to a depth of 35 feet and separately describes heating to a mean depth of approximately 40 feet. The installation included 80 natural-gas-powered thermal conduction heater wells, 33 multiphase extraction wells, shallow horizontal vapor extraction, and four temperature and pressure monitoring points.
Multiphase extraction ran for 20 days before heating to establish hydraulic and pneumatic control. The target temperature was 100°C.
Over 113 days of active heating, more than 52,000 pounds of chlorinated and petroleum contaminants were recovered. The case study reports average reductions greater than 99% for the listed contaminants in soil and groundwater. These results apply to the reported treatment zone and sampling basis.
