Tonawanda, New York: Multiphase Extraction and C3 Vapor Treatment

At an active manufacturing facility in Tonawanda, New York, investigations identified chlorinated VOCs as dense non-aqueous phase liquid and in soil, soil gas, and groundwater. The contaminant list included chlorinated ethanes and ethenes, ethylbenzene, toluene, and xylenes. Initial soil-gas VOC concentrations were approximately 2,600 ppm by volume.

A high-vacuum multiphase extraction system equipped with C3 Technology operated at a capacity of 200 standard cubic feet per minute. Equipment was housed in a semi-permanent structure to support operation during winter conditions.
Over approximately two years, the system recovered more than 38,000 pounds of VOCs as separate-phase liquid subsequently recycled offsite. The case study reports that soil and soil-gas goals were reached in the target volumes beneath the manufacturing building, avoiding excavation in those locations and associated disruption to business operations.
