Arizona Landfill: Solvent Recovery Using SVE and C3

GEO's Arizona landfill case study describes soil vapor extraction and C3 treatment near a historical waste-disposal pit. The identified contaminants included TCA, 1,1-DCE, and Freon 113. The geology included coarse- and fine-grained deposits separated in places by basalt.

Eleven fine-grained-zone extraction wells were connected to the system in March 2006. Additional sub-basalt wells were connected in December 2006 and August 2007 to support contaminant recovery. Operators adjusted extraction among wells as recovery conditions changed.

The narrative reports approximately 5,200 gallons of recovered solvents, equivalent to approximately 28.5 tons, between March 28, 2006, and December 31, 2007. It also describes decreases in the vadose-zone VOC plume and corresponding groundwater concentrations.

The 5,200-gallon value refers to recovered solvent product. It should not be described as a volume of treated groundwater.
