West Texas Refinery: Vapor Treatment and Petroleum Recovery

GEO's West Texas refinery case study describes petroleum recovery at a former refinery occupying approximately 64 acres. Historical releases affected soil and groundwater, including a dissolved benzene and 1,2-dichloroethane plume and separate-phase petroleum beneath the facility.

The remedy combined groundwater recovery and treatment with a source-area soil vapor extraction network. Sixty-two dual-nested vapor extraction wells served shallow and deep intervals. C3 systems treated extracted vapor, and a separate treatment train handled vapor from groundwater air stripping.
During the first five months of operation described in the report, the systems recovered more than 81,000 gallons of product condensate. The reported average recovery during that period was approximately 540 gallons per day.
These values describe the specified early operating period. They should not be presented as the final cumulative recovery or evidence that the entire site received regulatory closure.
