El Segundo, California: C3 Treatment of Solvents and Refrigerants

GEO's El Segundo case study describes vapor treatment at a former chemical manufacturing site redeveloped as a shopping and retail center. The contaminants included chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, and CFC and HCFC refrigerants.

Soil vapor extraction wells were installed beneath building foundations and parking areas during redevelopment. A 2,000-scfm extraction and C3 treatment system collected contaminants from shallow and deep vadose-zone intervals. The case study lists initial off-gas concentrations of 14,000 ppm by volume.
Over 24 months, the system recovered approximately 25,000 pounds of contaminant mass as non-aqueous phase liquid. The source also estimates lower emissions and a shorter treatment duration relative to the alternative vapor-treatment options evaluated for that site. Those comparisons are project-specific estimates.
The documented result is vapor-phase contaminant recovery at this commercial property. It should not be replaced by unrelated groundwater-concentration examples or represented as a citywide cleanup.
